THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 62nd Year

Meeting on January 28, 2010

The usual group of 18 members,  including seldom seen Norm Moss,  joined us for breakfast today. We enjoyed an assortment of breakfast rolls, scrambled eggs, hashbrown potatoes, link sausage and biscuits and gravy. For those not wishing  breakfast, chef salads were also available. All this was topped off with cookies compliments of Rod Wells. This was certainly one of the better meals since we have been at the Clarion.

President Eric Scott started us off with his commendable leading of the Sertoma song and his choice of God Bless America. Nice to have Norm Moss led us in the pledge and dependable Skip Hale prayed for us all. Thanks to these members for their contribution to our club.

Rod Wells introduced his son Brennan.  Some members may remember Brennan as he  helped the club the last couple of years at the USAFA during the State games.

                                Program

John Poyzer informed us that our census forms will arrive by mail in April and should take about 10 minutes to complete. You have about 2 weeks to respond to this  simplified form of 10 questions  everyone is expected to complete. Should you elect not to respond, someone will be on your phone or at your door not once but many times, until you do respond. The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census be taken every 10 years since 1790. The census must count every person living in the United States on April 1st. Everyone is counted! Armed forces personnel overseas, undocumented immigrants, homeless, everybody, no exceptions! All census information is completely confidential and not shared with any other agency or organization.   Census workers take an oath for life to not reveal any census information  and can go to jail for revealing any information. More than $400 billion in federal money is distributed each year based on census population figures. For each person not counted, the community loses valuable services. John advised that there are part time jobs available if  interested..  Thanks John for sharing all this information with us!

Jon Handy was the recipient of the small pot while Dana Franzen  won the big pot again.

It was suggested by Norm Andersson that since this is going to be a short season, maybe Dick Wilhelm should sign up!

Thanks Jon Handy for volunteering to head up our Valentines flowers program. I know that Jon will get lots of help as this is one of our most important programs.

Norm Andersson introduced Michael Brown, a lawyer, appointed by President George W. Bush as the first Undersecretary of Emergency Preparedness and Response, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, a position generally referred to as the Director or Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He served in that capacity from January 2003 until September 2005 when he resigned.

He related his hands on view, aboard a helicopter, to the ravages of the Thailand tsunami, The Big Tompson Flood and Katrina, to the present earthquake in Haiti. Where there was housing, commercial businesses, parks, etc. there is now nothing, but a two mile wide strip of debris. Complete devastation! As the world looks to the U.S.A. for help, President Obama has vowed one hundred million dollars in aid to Haiti, (money  we don’t have).  We wonder, how long this country can continue to help others as the biggest part of the federal budget is now its debt service which future generations will be responsible.  Michael said “yes, we must individually remember the people of Haiti by giving to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army or the charity of our choice”.  He also issued a challenge to us to “Get off our butts and be informed about what’s going on in the country and let others know that the money Washington spends is coming from our own pockets”.

Michael lives in Boulder and has a radio talk program on KOA, 850AM, 7PM to 10PM Monday thru Friday.

After a 2 week hiatus, 14 members met for the first luncheon of the new year, 2010. We were treated to a beef stir-fry (which was way too salty), fixins for salad including strips of ham and turkey, assorted fruit, bread, butter and cookies thanks to Mark Elliott for remembering. Mark did not make the meeting so thanks go to Terry Zebarth for bringing them.  As usual. Eric Scott got us going with the Sertoma song, Gay Hatler picked Auld Lang Syne to follow, Dana Franzen led us in the pledge and Gay prayed, once again, for us all.

Willie Horst put out a call for anyone interested in bowling.  Harmony Bowl is starting a short season (about 16 weeks) Monday nights at 6:30PM beginning January 18th.  This will be a mixed league (men & women, but can be just men or just women) and will be for FUN ONLY.  If interested, call Willie at 596-7948.  Let’s see if we can get 5 club members to make up a Sertoma  team.                            Program

Jon Handy introduced our speaker of the day, Charles Grayson, a former member of the Garden of the Gods Sertoma Club, who spoke to us about reverse mortgages.  He is with the Bank of Colorado and has 30 years experience in the banking industry. A reverse mortgage enables you to withdraw a portion of your home’s equity, use it any way you wish, make no form of monthly repayment, stay in your home as long as you like, and when you are ready to sell your home the loan is repaid. The loan is insured by the Federal Government. Prior to 1988 there were no safeguards and the risks were high as there was no protection from any State or Federal agency.  In that year, HUD adopted reverse mortgages and with the assistance of Congress enacted laws that put into place 12 safeguards to protect seniors.  Government regulations require all reverse mortgage lenders to operate under the same guidelines.

To qualify for a reverse mortgage you must be at least 62 years of age, own or be purchasing a home that is considered your primary residence, and the home must meet standard appraisal guidelines for property type, value and condition.  Factors such as credit rating, income and assets are not considered. It is strongly recommended you find a local lender who is a member of the 1st Reverse Mortgage USA  lender network to help you complete a loan. For any further information or to receive brochures with information about reverse mortgages, call Charles Grayson at 719-304-5119.

Thanks to Jon Handy for a most informative program.
