Bob Louden finally has sold some filing cabinets! Terry Zebarth and his business partner (Bob didn’t know his name) were the customers and of course Bob  was fined again.

                           Program

We welcomed fellow Sertomans Jo Carroll  and Jerry Losey of Monument Hill Sertoma/Kiwanis Club.

Jo had a slide presentation and explained some of the reasons for leaving Sertoma in favor of Kiwanis:

  • Youth programs
  • Leadership
  • Concessions
  • Dues comparison
  • Trends in Sertoma, Inc.

This was not a hasty decision as a strategic planning committee was formed with over 140 years of cumulative membership in Sertoma.  Discussed were the trends in Sertoma and whether a stand-alone club or re-affiliating with another club should be considered.  Through a process of elimination of several choices, and much discussion, and several meetings, the decision to affiliate with Kiwanis was made. Monument Hill will officially become a Kiwanis club on July 1, 2010.

February Birthdays – HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Thanks again to Jon Handy for taking charge of the flowers for widows program.  A couple of members gave reports about their visits and how pleased the ladies are to not only get the flowers but a visit with the member.                            Program

As this was the third Thursday of the month and our monthly fellowship meeting, there was no program.

Frank Ulrich did however, bring us up to date on  H.E.A.R.S. (Hearing, Education and Assistance by Rocky Mountain Sertomans).   After several years  under the wing of Easter Seals and then Disability Services of Colorado, HEARS is now being administrated by a very dedicated group of Sertoma  members and doing quite well. The new location of the office is now 2125 E La Salle Street in the Mission Medical Center building which will provide mail service, internet, secure rooms and support which gives HEARS the opportunity to grow. During the first 5 months under the direction of these Sertoma  members, 45 applications have been processed and 19 clients have received hearing aids. The future of HEARS is in good hands!!!

                           Program

John Whitten (Yes,  John’s son) was our speaker today.  As you may remember, John was a scholarship recipient and attended Montana State in Bozeman and is  an architect with a masters degree.

He is a volunteer for Architecture For Humanity. It’s a pro-bono  organization founded in 1999  by a Brit, Cammeron Sinclair, who is the executive director.

AFH celebrated their 10th anniversary last year and  functions around the globe often responding to natural disasters.  John showed us many slides from places such as Iran, India, Afghanistan, Haiti and the U.S. where  temporary or permanent buildings have been built. Included were  a soccer stadium, an indoor skating rink in Kabul and a building in Biloxi, MS that won an award for design. Also a school in Sri Lanka built for, $200.00 thanks to volunteers and many donated building materials. The average age of volunteers is 32 and 25% of donations come from young people, aged 7 to 30 years.

One of their projects, Hope House in Calcutta, was built with hopes of keeping kids away from the sex trade which is rampant there.

John  said the UN predicts that it will take 25 years to rebuild Haiti to pre-earthquake conditions. Short term priorities are health care, reliable shelter, food/water, get government working again and providing relief to those affected. Thanks to both Whitten’s for a very informative program!

THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 62nd Year

Meeting on February 4, 2010

The day started out cold and snowy, but quickly warmed up as 18 members gathered for lunch and fellowship. The lunch featured either BBQ ribs or Mahi Mahi, or both, along with an assortment of veggies, oven browned potatoes, rice, rolls and butter.  Several members opted for a chef salad which is always a good choice.  Thanks to Dana (Andrews) Franzen we enjoyed a wonderful Pecan Bar for dessert.  The Sertoma Song was the only one sung and Jerry Novak had yomen duties today as he led us in the pledge and also was our program. Bob Louden was kind enough to lead us in prayer.

Guest Sertomans & Guests

Brennan Wells paid us a second visit in as many weeks. Always nice to have family members attend our meetings!

Announcements

Terry (Zebart) Zebarth  informed us that the Scholarship Committee meeting had an excellent turnout.  He brought us up to date with the financial information and mentioned that the fund is doing well.  The board decided to continue to fund the 5 students  that are presently being funded.  As the board continues to be extremely conservative, no additional scholarships will be accepted until we can provide additional funds through fund raisers.

Eric Scott displayed the Governors Travelling Trophy which was taken from Gleneagle Sertoma Club on 2/3/2010. Poyzer, Franzen, Zebarth, Wells, Ulrich and Scott made up the 6 necessary members in order to bring it back to our club. Those members that were signed up to attend the Gleneagle meeting and did not show, were duly fined.

A reminder that we are to deliver flowers to our widows.  Flowers can be picked up 10AM, Saturday, February 13th  in the parking lot of the Clarion Hotel. If you signed up to deliver Be There!

Business Notes

Jerry Novak announced a new business venture with Bob Louden which I am unable to repeat here.

Culture

A couple of weak attempts not worthy of repeating.

Program

Former member and hopefully a member soon again, Jerry Novak, of Classic Homes, spoke to us about the state of the home building/construction industry.  As we know, this industry has suffered more than most with building permits at all time lows.

In January of ’05, 486 permits were issued for single family dwellings compared to 71 in January of ’09.  During the first 10 months in 2009, permits have fluctuated between the low of 71 and a high of 175 in June. The total of all permits in January ’05, including single family, residential alterations, new commercial, commercial alterations and all other totaled 4,209.  During January of ’09 the total was 2,624

Classic Homes has had as many as 200 employees  but is now down to 80. Unfortunately many  with the company were long time employees.

Jerry has been spending most of his time in Pueblo and had a 3 man crew which is now down to one, Jerry.  He mentioned that Classic is in good shape and has considerable amounts of vacant land to build on once things start looking up again. However, getting loans for companies like Classic remains a problem.

$$$$$$$$

Bob Louden got the pocket change while Frank Dowis landed the big bucks.
