THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 63rd Year

Meeting on April 22, 2010

We had a nice group of 22 members in addition to our speaker today.  The meal consisted of ham with a cherry glaze, green beans, potatoes or a chef salad and cookies thanks to Mark Elliott. Our leader Eric Scott started us in the Sertoma song and Jon Handy followed with When Your Smiling.  Surprisingly we did a good job with it.  That now makes a total of 2 songs that we are capable of singing. Thanks to Dana Franzen for leading us in the pledge and Bob (the snow must be melting in the mountains) Mossey for his leadership in prayer.

Guest Sertomans & Guests   None

Announcements  Prez Eric reminded us to sign up for the Soap Box Derby June 6th, 12th and 13th.  This is a fun event so consider signing up.

Bob Mossey advised that several bike trips are available that would include transportation if 8 people sign up.  Contact Bob if interested.

Also, Starlight Spectacular is June 12th and contact Terry Z. for more information.

The next board meeting is Tuesday, April 27th at Dana’s office, 3870 Mark Dabling, 5:30PM.  This will be an important meeting as the way we do business will be the main topic.  It is suggested that you attend and voice your concerns, if any.

Culture Norm Moss and Norm Andersson both told stinkers so please no more NORM jokes!

Business Notes   None

Program

Thanks to Norm Andersson and the radio program, Coast to Coast, our speaker today was Jeff Danelek.  Seems that Norm heard Jeff (who lives in Littleton) on the program while trying to get to sleep, contacted him and set up the program.

Jeff’s subject was Paranormal Investigations.  It has always been his dream to be a writer.  After difficulty finding publishers, Jeff has had several books published.

His first book,  Atlantis questions “where is it?”

His second book, Reincarnation queries how it might work and where do ghosts fit in?.

He met several people interested in ghosts while writing his next book, The Case For Ghosts, his most successful book to date.  It is interesting to know that over 50% of people actually believe there are ghosts.

His 4th book, a reworks of his 1st book, Atlantis recalls global civilizations 12,000 years ago.

Next book, published last year is, UFO’s, The Great Debate.

The 6th is the story of Stan Romanek who claims to have been abducted by extraterrestrials.  An amazing story of over 100 individually unique experiences that he has encountered since the year 2000, many of which remain unexplainable.

Jeff has two additional books available, The Great Airshow of 1896 and 2010  about prophesies.

This was a most interesting program and thanks to Norm for making the extra effort to get Jeff.

$$$$$$$$$  Jerry Carle and Jim Clark split the small pot and Skip Hale might consider another cruise (or just bringing cookies) with all the money from the big pot.

Our ever present Eric Scott started us in the Sertoma Song and Norm Andersson selected Pack Up Your Troubles to sing.  Trouble was we had plenty of troubles singing it!  Thanks to Jim Clark leading us in the pledge and John Whitten for his prayer!

                             Program

Today was fellowship day and Willie Horst fined several members for not wearing their Sertoma shirts.  The program was a follow up on the surveys that were sent to all members of which about 15 replied.

A steering committee has been formed and  met at Mark Elliott’s office on April 14th . Dick Wilhelm  reviewed the major concerns of the membership at this meeting. A few of these concerns were presented at todays meeting and included the following:

  • Changing the make-up of the officers and board to consist of: Chairman, President, V.P., Treasurer, Secretary, Sgt. At Arms, 5th year and 10th years past Presidents plus 2 others .

  • Board would be the nominating committee.

  • Meetings:  Committee suggests changing to an upscale restaurant.  Also consider changing meeting days, number of meeting per month, etc.

  • Fund-raising:  less physical and more mental fundraisers.  Teaming up with another club.  Making an impact on the community.

  • Social:  Continue what we have been doing and keep the wives involved.

  • Identity:  Need to make others aware of who we are.

  • Our focus areas should be:

  •
    1. Fund raising/participation
    2. Membership
    3. Marketing (our own club)
    4. Programs
    5. Social

The next board meeting will be at Dana Franzen’s office on April 27thThis will be an important meeting as the way we do business will be the main topic.  It is suggested that you attend and voice your concerns, if any!!!

Meeting on April 8, 2010

Bright Colorado sunshine brought out 17 members  today.  The meal (a good one) consisted of a choice of a chef salad or chicken marsala, rice, veggies, rolls, butter and 2 kinds of cookies thanks to Norm Andersson.   Eric Scott did his usual good job of leading us in the Sertoma  song and we were a little off key with Take Me Out To The Ballgame. Thanks to Mike Cimino leading us in the pledge and also thanks to Norm Moss for his prayer.  It’s nice to have so many members that can lead us in prayer when our “pros” are not in attendance.

                         Announcements

Terry Zebarth informed us that the Scholarship fund is doing well and has had a nice financial gain since the first of the year.  Norm Moss painted us a picture of real estate in general and says the summer looks good with incentives still in effect.

                             Culture

Mark Elliott had some very funny sayings and our club Democrat took it all in good stride by fining Mark several quarters.

                             Program

Thanks to Norm Andersson and Dick Wilhelm we were introduced to Leah Witherow, Archivist  with the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum. The first day she visited the museum she loved it and said to herself, “this is where I want to be” and has been there since 1994.  In 1896 the El Paso County Pioneers Association was formed and in 1909 the first exhibit was on display at the El Paso courthouse. In 1937 the El Paso County Pioneers Association donated their collection of artifacts and and the exhibit was open free to the public.  In 1992, the museum was accredited by the American Association of museums and some of the collections include:

  • 75,000 artifacts including the largest collection of Van Briggle pottery
  • 80,000 historical photographs
  • William J. Palmer diaries and letters
  • Cragin western history collection
  • William  Stratton collection
  • Collection of the Negro Historical Association of Colorado Springs
  • The  courthouse itself

Attendance at the museum peaked in 2006 with over 60,000 visitors and was down a little in 2009  due to the economy.

The museum, with just 6 employees was slated to close this year, however, council all of a sudden “found” enough funds to keep the museum open.  The 2010 budget includes $365,000 from county general fund, gifting funds of $149,000 and a federal stimulus payment of  $125,000.

Now the Pioneers Museum is trying to bridge the gap for 2011 and to date has raised over $92,000  and has a long way to go,  but are optimistic.

Leah fielded some very interesting questions about Nikola Tesla (they have his signature only, nothing else) and Starsmore who had a considerable impact on the museum.  If you were not in attendance you missed an excellent program.  Thanks Norm  and Dick!

                            $$$$$$$$$$

Eric $cott received the little pot and Frank Ulrich got the big one.

Next week is “wear your Sertoma shirt day” for the monthly fellowship meeting

THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 62nd Year

Meeting on April 1, 2010

Twenty members met for lunch today.  Choices were a chef salad or a taco bar with all the trimmings and  assorted diced fruit.  Terry Zebarth brought a nice choice of cookies and cake.   Eric Scott did his usual good job of leading us in the Sertoma  song.  Dick Rackley suggested we sing Easter Parade (very appropriate) which we gave up  half way through.  Maybe we should just stick to  Take Me Out To The Ballgame every meeting as we seem to be able to finish it. Thanks to Art Lacy for leading us in the pledge and also thanks to Bob Louden for the prayer.

                  Guest Sertomans & Guests

Mark Elliott and John Whitten brought David Tyree, Director of Codes and Standards for the Building Owners and Managers Association International.  I understand that he was given a membership application.  Would be a great new member!

                       Announcements

Terry Zebarth reminded us of the Starlight Spectacular bicycle ride June 12th. He is drumming up  more  members to compete.

                             Culture

Today was culture day, when you could tell a joke/story and not be fined by Willie.  Some were okay but most were bad!

                        Business Notes

Bob Louden still has some steelcase files, bookcases, popcorn machines and a ’61 Corvair convertible for sale.

                           Program

Norm Andersson  advised  via email that today would be ugly tie day.  Several members showed up and Coach Carle was assigned the job of selecting the winner.  Might know that he selected himself as winner but he did have fun with it.  Sounds like this may be an annual event.

The board of directors met at Dick Wilhelm’s on March 26th with 16 members present.  Dick put together a summery of the surveys that each member received and several topics were discussed.  A few were:

  1. Thrusts/Strategies
  • More service action projects with exposure to the needs of local people,  serve & help
  • Grow membership
  • Become involved in something with high visibility
  • Give service to community, not just $$
  • Projects in which new members would be interested
  • More volunteering/participation

  1. Participation level
  • Continue to serve when and where needed
  • Get  members more proactive, can only survive with the efforts of all members
  • Continue with good speakers, advertise them.

  1. Membership cost/structures
  • Change meeting to a prominent location
  • Change to a semi or monthly meeting
  • Secure members from a variety of professions

  1. Sponsorship
  • More volunteer projects
  • Utilize funds for the greatest number of people
  • Work with a non-profit

Thanks to Dick for the many hours he put into this.

                        $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

John Poyzer and Bob Louden split the big pot, Norm Andersson brings cookies next week.
