Eric Scott introduced Kim Green, a therapist with Franciscan Community Counseling at Mt. St.  Francis.  Franciscan Community Counseling (FCC) was established in 1987 by the Sisters of St. Francis in Colorado Springs affording mental healthservices to the people of the region. FCC is financially supported by a variety of donors including Pikes Peak United Way, the Sisters of St. Francis, church communities of the region and various other organizations.

Kim works with post traumatic stress disorder patients, mostly patients involved in domestic violence and sexual assult.

Prior to her arrival at St. Francis she was in Wichita working with Viet Nam Vets with PTSD.  She is most interested in body chemistry and cited that all emotions have a chemical reaction.  She explained why the body reacts by shaking during and after an automobile accident. This is caused by an adrenaline reaction expending energy and should not try to be stopped. Awareness is important in situations such as this. Kim explained traumatic brain injuries caused by body fluids not going between the lower spine and brain.  Cranial therapy is sometimes preformed by an osteopathic doctor.

There will be NO bulletin next week.  The bulletin editor will be out of town.

Norm Andersson introduced Lennie Coleman, an Air Force Academy graduate and now a retired Colonel.  He spoke on the United States response to Hurricane Katrina with an air expeditionary group.

The Colonel explained how the military preformed services at the New Orleans International Airport.  He described how the Delta Terminal was turned into a hospital and morgue and how space was created for 4500 beds for displaced persons.  He told how 20-30  airevac helicopters evacuated persons and how medevac cared for some 3200 patients.

This hurricane was the costliest as well as one of the five deadliest and largest natural disasters in the history of the U.S. At least 1,836 people lost their lives in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent floods.  Winds reached 175 MPH while heavy rain brought 8 to 10 inches and caused over 80 billion dollars in damage.

The hurricane formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and on August 29th made its second landfall in Southeast Louisana after crossing southern Florida. The storm surge caused 53 different levee breaches in greater New Orleans submerging 80% of the city.  An estimated 3 million people were left without power.

President George W. Bush declared a state of emergency on August 27th in Louisana, Alabama and Mississippi.   The economic effects of the storm were far-reaching.  The Bush administration sought $105 billion for repairs and reconstruction in the region which did not account for damage to the economy or infrastructure.  To this day, 5 years later, thousands of people are still living in trailers.

Thanks again to Norm for an interesting program!!

Introducing our 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt (in the person of  Don Moon).

Don’s portrayal of T.R.  has taken off and he has been part of many public and private events.  Don is a Colorado native with roots going back to the 1800’s when his grandparents arrived in Colorado in a covered wagon and homesteaded 640 acres along the Arkansas River. Don was raised in Pueblo and after 19 months in Viet Nam he settled in Colorado Springs. Dons’ portrayal of Theodore Roosevelt takes on his personal and political and civic life.

During his program, Don lives the life of Roosevelt from start to finish and tells of Roosevelts days as NYC Police Commissioner, Undersecretary of the Navy, his rough riders days, Governor of NY and of course, Vice-President and President.  T.R. was born in 1858 in New York City into an affluent family.  He wanted to be a natural scientist and studied nature at his home in Oyster Bay and in the Adirondack’s as a youth.  He attended Harvard and excelled in boxing and rowing and was the captain of the boxing team.

T.R. was a consummate politician and had been schooled by his father and mother to be a leader, nothing but the best effort was due. A wonderful program!!!!
