Program
John Whitten (Yes, John’s son) was our speaker today. As you may remember, John was a scholarship recipient and attended Montana State in Bozeman and is an architect with a masters degree.
He is a volunteer for Architecture For Humanity. It’s a pro-bono organization founded in 1999 by a Brit, Cammeron Sinclair, who is the executive director.
AFH celebrated their 10th anniversary last year and functions around the globe often responding to natural disasters. John showed us many slides from places such as Iran, India, Afghanistan, Haiti and the U.S. where temporary or permanent buildings have been built. Included were a soccer stadium, an indoor skating rink in Kabul and a building in Biloxi, MS that won an award for design. Also a school in Sri Lanka built for, $200.00 thanks to volunteers and many donated building materials. The average age of volunteers is 32 and 25% of donations come from young people, aged 7 to 30 years.
One of their projects, Hope House in Calcutta, was built with hopes of keeping kids away from the sex trade which is rampant there.
John said the UN predicts that it will take 25 years to rebuild Haiti to pre-earthquake conditions. Short term priorities are health care, reliable shelter, food/water, get government working again and providing relief to those affected. Thanks to both Whitten’s for a very informative program!
$$$$$$$$
Terry Zebarth collected pocket change while Dick Wilhelm took home the big bucks (again!).
