THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 62nd Year

Meeting on February 18, 2010

Sixteen members gathered today for lunch of turkey and dressing or tilapia or both, along with green beans, noodles, rolls and butter. Thanks to Dick Wilhelm for the cookies that Terry Zebarth delivered.  Eric Scott started us off with the Sertoma song which was the one and only song sung.  Terry Zebarth led us in the pledge and Gay Hatler blessed us in prayer including a special and memorable prayer for Helen and Glenn and the extended family.  We are so fortunate to have Gay as a member!

                 Guest Sertomans & Guests

Mark Elliott introduced their son, Jared who is a trainer for a Tampa Bay Rays minor league baseball team.

                       Announcements

Helen Fosters service is Friday, February 19th, 3PM at the Broadmoor Community Church.

Terry Zebarth announced the annual Starlight Spectacular bicycle ride date is June 12th.  The ride begins at midnight starting and ending at the Garden of the Gods visitor and nature center.  Last year there were 1500 participants and Terry says the more the merrier!  More registration information later.

Rod Wells reported on the success of the dinner and play on February 13th.  Everyone enjoyed Giuseppe’s and the play was excellent.   Rod promised to do something similar in the future.  Speaking of Rod, seems he is scheduled to go to China next month for about 3 weeks teaching English.

Thanks again to Jon Handy for taking charge of the flowers for widows program.  A couple of members gave reports about their visits and how pleased the ladies are to not only get the flowers but a visit with the member. One recipient mentioned that these are the only flowers they receive all year.  Makes you feel proud!!

If you have not completed your survey, it is asked that you do it as soon as possible and return it to Dick Wilhelm.  The board is anxious to review them!

                             Culture

Rod Wells and Gay Hatler had very funny stories but were fined anyway!

                        Business Notes

Bob Louden still has Steelcase lateral files and other miscellaneous office equipment for sale.  All is deeply discounted and sounds like good deals.  Call Bob for more information. (Yes, he was fined, again).

                           Program

As this was the third Thursday of the month and our monthly fellowship meeting, there was no program.

Frank Ulrich did however, bring us up to date on  H.E.A.R.S. (Hearing, Education and Assistance by Rocky Mountain Sertomans).   After several years  under the wing of Easter Seals and then Disability Services of Colorado, HEARS is now being administrated by a very dedicated group of Sertoma  members and doing quite well. The new location of the office is now 2125 E La Salle Street in the Mission Medical Center building which will provide mail service, internet, secure rooms and support which gives HEARS the opportunity to grow. During the first 5 months under the direction of these Sertoma  members, 45 applications have been processed and 19 clients have received hearing aids. The future of HEARS is in good hands!!!
