Meeting on February 25, 2010

Eighteen members met for lunch today.  Choices were a chef salad or beef bourguignonne,  broccoli, rice, rolls and butter and thanks to Harry Hoth, everyone enjoyed  an assortment of cookies.  Eric Scott did his usual good job of leading us in the Sertoma  song.  Our guest and fellow Sertoman, Jo Carroll suggested we sing, When You’re Smiling and Norm Moss led us in the pledge.  Gay Hatler again blessed us in prayer remembering Glenn Foster and Helen and the extended families.

                  Guest Sertomans & Guests

Jon Handy introduced guest, Dave Hudspeth, a retired banker and son of former member, Roy HudspethRoy had an office coffee service while in our club.   Some older members may remember him as he joined the club in 1969.

                             Culture

Gay Hatler and our guest, Jerry Losey were fined for their stories, but, Marv Sucharski  received a quarter for his story.

                        Business Notes

Bob Louden finally has sold some filing cabinets! Terry Zebarth and his business partner (Bob didn’t know his name) were the customers and of course Bob  was fined again.

                           Program

We welcomed fellow Sertomans Jo Carroll  and Jerry Losey of Monument Hill Sertoma/Kiwanis Club.

Jo had a slide presentation and explained some of the reasons for leaving Sertoma in favor of Kiwanis:

  • Youth programs
  • Leadership
  • Concessions
  • Dues comparison
  • Trends in Sertoma, Inc.

This was not a hasty decision as a strategic planning committee was formed with over 140 years of cumulative membership in Sertoma.  Discussed were the trends in Sertoma and whether a stand-alone club or re-affiliating with another club should be considered.  Through a process of elimination of several choices, and much discussion, and several meetings, the decision to affiliate with Kiwanis was made. Monument Hill will officially become a Kiwanis club on July 1, 2010.
