THE PIKES PEAK SERTOMAN Now in our 62nd Year

                                    Meeting on January 7, 2010

After a 2 week hiatus, 14 members met for the first luncheon of the new year, 2010. We were treated to a beef stir-fry (which was way too salty), fixins for salad including strips of ham and turkey, assorted fruit, bread, butter and cookies thanks to Mark Elliott for remembering. Mark did not make the meeting so thanks go to Terry Zebarth for bringing them.  As usual. Eric Scott got us going with the Sertoma song, Gay Hatler picked Auld Lang Syne to follow, Dana Franzen led us in the pledge and Gay prayed, once again, for us all.

                         Announcements

Ladies night out, celebrating Valentines Day, is tentatively scheduled February 13th  with dinner and show at UCCS. More specifics on this later but mark your calendar for 2/13/10!

Willie Horst put out a call for anyone interested in bowling.  Harmony Bowl is starting a short season (about 16 weeks) Monday nights at 6:30PM beginning January 18th.  This will be a mixed league (men & women, but can be just men or just women) and will be for FUN ONLY.  If interested, call Willie at 596-7948.  Let’s see if we can get 5 club members to make up a Sertoma  team. We already have 2 members signed up.

Governors Travelling Trophy is presently held by Gleneagle Seroma Club. We need a group to attend their meeting January 20th, 11:45AM at the Academy Hotel, 8110 North Academy Blvd. Let’s get a big group to bring it back home where it belongs!  A sign up sheet circulated today and will again next week. If you won’t be at the next meeting and want to help claim what is rightfully ours, call Eric, 632-1668 and have him add you to the list.  Let’s see if we can get a big group to go!

                           Program

Jon Handy introduced our speaker of the day, Charles Grayson, a former member of the Garden of the Gods Sertoma Club, who spoke to us about reverse mortgages.  He is with the Bank of Colorado and has 30 years experience in the banking industry. A reverse mortgage enables you to withdraw a portion of your home’s equity, use it any way you wish, make no form of monthly repayment, stay in your home as long as you like, and when you are ready to sell your home the loan is repaid. The loan is insured by the Federal Government. Prior to 1988 there were no safeguards and the risks were high as there was no protection from any State or Federal agency.  In that year, HUD adopted reverse mortgages and with the assistance of Congress enacted laws that put into place 12 safeguards to protect seniors.  Government regulations require all reverse mortgage lenders to operate under the same guidelines.

To qualify for a reverse mortgage you must be at least 62 years of age, own or be purchasing a home that is considered your primary residence, and the home must meet standard appraisal guidelines for property type, value and condition.  Factors such as credit rating, income and assets are not considered. It is strongly recommended you find a local lender who is a member of the 1st Reverse Mortgage USA  lender network to help you complete a loan. For any further information or to receive brochures with information about reverse mortgages, call Charles Grayson at 719-304-5119.

Thanks to Jon Handy for a most informative program.
