Program
Norm Andersson introduced Army Col. Mary Miller who spoke on Patriotism. Col. Miller spoke of her deployment and command after a year long tour in Iraq. Mary had a slide presentation (assisted by guest, Lt. Gary Turner) that included 19th century patriotic women:
- Julia Ward Howe - pioneer in literature, author of “Battle Hymn Of The Republic”.
- Betsy Ross - 8th of 17 children, born 1/1/1752, Philadelphia. First American Flag.
- Harriet Beecher Stowe - Ardent abolitionist, most notable for authoring “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”.
- Katherine Bates – Professor of English at Wellesley College and author of “America The Beautiful”.
- Lucy Webb Hayes - wife of Rutherford B. Hayes and the first presidents wife to be called the “First Lady”.
- Ann Jarvis – Founder of Mothers Day in 1907, 1st internationally celebrated holiday
The Col. stated that along with wars comes patriotism but what about during peacetime. Model patriotism comes from many sources including ROTC and the Olympics. We must impart Values, Duty, Country, Respect, Integrity, Personal Courage, Selfless Service and Loyalty to patriotism. If not us – Who? – If not now – When? She ended her presentation with the quote, “The tree of patriotism is often watered in blood”. This was one of the best programs in a long time and if you weren’t there, you missed a good one. Thanks Norm!
